Adult Secondary Education

Program Information

Academic Instruction is a competency-based adult high school diploma program that provides opportunities for high school students to make up credits and for adult students to earn a high school diploma, prepare for the CA High School Equivalency Certificate, and enhance academic skills needed for vocational training.

We offer rigorous academic curriculum:

1.  Thirty-three"a-g" approved courses:

  • Core courses approved by the University of California to satisfy UC subject requirements for freshman admission.

2.  Academic courses equivalent to LAUSD secondary courses:

  • Instruction and assessment are personalized, based on each student's abilities, interests, and goals.

  • Open enrollment allows for entry into the program at any time.

  • Self-paced learning occurs in Individualized Instruction Centers or through whole-group instruction.

  • In Adult Independent Study (AIS), students work independently but meet with a supervising teacher regularly.

Target Population

  • Adults 18 years and older.

  • Concurrently-enrolled students and at-risk youth.

  • Students preparing to pass the California High School Equivalency Test.

Program Focus

  • Adult students complete the graduation requirements to earn a high school diploma.

  • Concurrently-enrolled students make up deficient high school credits.

  • At-risk youth study in a special setting to complete course requirements for a high school diploma.

  • All students receive a rigorous education in order to pass the California High School Equivalency Test.

Admission to the High School Diploma Program

All prospective students must take the TABE placement test.  All students take a reading and writing assessment to determine the level of classes that are appropriate for their skills.  A low entrance score may place a student in the Adult Basic Education (ABE) program for remediation before entering the High School program. The second assessment is the TABE Math to determine the appropriate math level.  Similarly, a low entrance score may place a student in the ABE program for remediation.
