Academic Office (Room 232A)

People become students in the academic department to improve or obtain skills in reading, writing, math, computer, and /or sign language. Many decide to obtain their high school diplomas or GED certificates either upon entry into the academic program or once they have completed a few courses there. The Adult Basic Studies and adult high school courses of which the academic department is comprised are structured to assist students, particularly adult students, with achieving such goals.

From the Varying class times and the variety of courses to the different methods of teaching offered, students may choose a schedule of classes that will suit their needs. Courses are offered from 7:15 a.m. Until 9:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday; until 3:00 p.m. Friday; and from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. On Saturday. While Evans offers the most teacher-directed course of any adult school within the Los Angeles Unified School District, teacher-directed instruction as well as individualized instruction is available for several of the courses offered, enabling students to study at their own paces, hone their skills for higher education and/or the workplace or simply fulfill a personal goal.

The academic program at Evans is divided into two parts: Adult Basic Studies (ABS) and high school. Student enrolled in the Adult Basic Studies Program are acquiring or honing their language arts (reading and writing) and computational skills so that they are more equipped to handle high school courses where students are expected to read at the ninth grade level or above, write essays and think critically in order to solve math problems and acquire competency in all subjects for obtaining a high school diploma. The Academic program offers a variety of courses such as Computers, Math Review, Algebra, English, History and Consumer Economics, assisting students in obtaining their high school diplomas, passing the GED and CAHSEE, and acquiring skills necessary for success in higher education. The program offers a variety of class time slots.
