The Adult ESL program offers adults with no or limited English proficiency an opportunity to acquire and learn the English language communications skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in a competency-based format. The curriculum is designed to meet the diverse needs of students, ranging from the English of daily living to the language required for entry into vocational and academic programs. Student learning is enhanced by participation in ESL computer and Language Lab activities. ESL classes offer non-native speakers the opportunity to improve their language skills. Of the over 20,000 students who enroll in Evans every year, about 80% are enrolled in ESL classes. ESL students fill our classes from beginning literacy through advanced low levels. Within the ESL department there are several special programs available to our students: Citizenship, Community-Based English Tutoring (CBET), Distance Learning, Intensive English Program (IEP). English is the basis for every other class at Evans. Knowledge of another language makes one's world bigger. Knowledge of English leads our students out into the bigger world of better employment opportunities and higher education goals. |
